The Newbery Banquet
Walk Two Moons was honored by the American Library Association with the Newbery Medal at a banquet at the Chicago Hyatt Regency in June, 1995. My whole family, along with two thousand librarians, publishers, editors, writers and illustrators were there to celebrate with me. It was the night of a lifetime!

One of my favorite photos. It was taken at the banquet. In the midst of the crowd of some two thousand people, this young girl was reading Walk Two Moons. I later learned that she is the great-granddaughter of Frederic G. Melcher, who first proposed the Newbery Medal to ALA in 1921.
