"Two Big Grandmas” arose from a photo that my daughter took of me and Pearl’s other grandma gazing down at her. We must have looked awfully big to her, and we probably sounded very ineloquent: all we could say was “Ooh!” and “Ahh!” and “Aww!” and “Oh!” I especially love Diaz’s illustration for this, which shows two enormous grandmas dressed in pink and rose with huge hearts on their dresses.

“Leaky Baby” was sparked by a photo I took of my daughter (Pearl’s mother) holding Pearl. At the moment the picture was taken, Pearl spit up on her mother’s shoulder: blurrrrp. My daughter said, “Such a leaky baby!”

Who's That Baby? is a collection of short poems/songs, which opens with the questions adults often have when they see a new baby: “Who are you baby, newly born, who’s this little babe?“ The rest of WHO’S THAT BABY? is from the point of view of the baby--what she or he might be thinking if we could see inside that head. There are songs about leaky babies and burrito babies, grandmas and grandpas, moms and dads.

David Diaz is the illustrator. When I first saw his drawings, I cried because they are so beautiful: so rich in color and design, so tender and elegant.


I took--and still take--an awful lot of photos of my granddaughter Pearl, and for her first Christmas, I made a small book for her: little songs and poems to accompany some of these newborn-photos, trying to imagine what she might be thinking in each one. That little hand-made book evolved into this one, Who's That Baby?
